Voices Raised
The Voices Raised project was devised by CCI and Kendal's Brewery Arts Centre to inject new life into one of England's - and Cumbria's - greatest traditions: Choral Singing. Everywhere choral societies, which have been for almost two centuries the backbone of the English music scene, are experiencing the same problem of recruiting young singers to their ranks. Voices Raised aimed to show young people what opportunities there are in choral singing for a life-long activity and also encouraged local choral societies to look at ways of making themselves more attractive to young singers.
From October 2003 through to June 2004 there were monthly workshops for young singers at the Brewery run by national experts in the fields of Barbershop Singing, Folk and World Music, Gospel Singing and Music Theatre. On Thursday 24th June these styles reappeared in a day of workshops and rehearsals at the Brewery. Here are some pictures of that workshop day…
